Matcha is a vibrant green powdered tea that is well-known for its unique flavor and numerous health benefits. Derived from specially grown and processed green tea leaves, matcha is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Its distinctive taste can be described as earthy, grassy, and slightly sweet. Matcha is commonly used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and has gained popularity worldwide for its versatility in culinary creations.

To make these matcha chocolate chip cookies, you will need the following equipment:

  • Small cookie scoop
  • Mixing bowls
  • ¾ sheet baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Food scale
  • Cooling rack
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula

Ingredients

  • 1⅓ cup (167 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp (16 g) cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp (30 g) matcha powder
  • ½ tsp (2 g) baking soda
  • ½ cup (114 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ⅔ cup (133 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (110 g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1½ tsp (7 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup (177 g) chocolate chips (semi-sweet)

Let’s get started with the instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and matcha powder until well combined. Set this mixture aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until you achieve a smooth consistency.
  3. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until they are combined into a dough. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Use a small cookie scoop to scoop out the dough onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, spacing the dough about 2 inches apart.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes to chill.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) when you’re ready to bake the cookies.
  7. Place the baking sheet with the chilled dough in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown. The centers may appear slightly underdone, but they will continue to cook a bit as they cool.

A few notes to enhance your baking experience:

  • Matcha powder: typically, people tend to use just 1 tablespoon of matcha powder, but I have discovered that using 2 tablespoons creates an exceptionally distinctive matcha flavor that is truly exceptional.
  • Salted butter: I typically use unsalted butter in baking and I find that we do not need salt in this cookie recipe. However, you can add ¼ tsp salt if you are used to adding salt to cookie recipe.

Now, prepare to be delighted by these matcha chocolate chip cookies. They make a perfect treat for any occasion, whether it’s a cozy evening at home or a gathering with loved ones. Enjoy! ( with a cup of hot matcha latte like this 🙂
