Quick and Tasty Instant Pot Beef Phở Recipe

Prepare authentic Vietnamese phở with the help of your Instant Pot for a delicious meal in no time. In my recipes, I  embrace the spirit of creativity in cooking. Think of it as your personal culinary canvas. You will often find that in my recipe, the cake mix can be used or a sauce package can be used just to make your cooking easier ( especially when you have a baby! Hello parenthood!)

This recipe is designed to be simple and delightful:

Ingredients:

  • 2lbs beef bones (mix of marrow and knuckle bones) + 1lb oxtail ( I always use mixed beef bone and some with beef bone with meat to make the broth tasty)
  • 1 onion, halved and peeled
  • 5-6cm slice of ginger
  • 1 package of Old Man Que Huong Pho Bac Spice Seasoning
  • 1kg beef brisket or flank steak
  • 400g rice noodles or 1 package of fresh phở noodle from the Vietnamese market
  • Thinly sliced green onions
  • Coarsely chopped coriander
  • A bunch of fragrant Thai basil
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • Bean sprouts, for a satisfying crunch
  • Hoisin sauce, for sweetness
  • Sriracha sauce, for spiciness
  • Fish sauce, salt and pepper

Instructions:

  • Clean the beef bones with boiling water to ensure they’re ready to go.
  • Place the beef bones in the Instant Pot and cover them with water.
  • In a pan, slightly char the ginger and onions for about 3 minutes until they’re fragrant and slightly blackened.
  • Also char the Old Man Que Huong Pho Bac Spice Seasoning (star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and cardamom pods) about 2 mins.
  • Add the charred ginger and onions to the Instant Pot along with the beef bones.
  • Seal the Instant Pot and set it to high pressure for 1hr. Let the pressure release naturally for 10-15 minutes before opening.
  • Remove the bones and skim off any impurities that might have surfaced.
  • At this point, if you think the broth is too concentrated, you can also add more water to dilute the broth ( depending on how fatty you want for the broth).
  • Add Old Man Que Huong Pho Bac Spice Seasoning (star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and cardamom pods) to the pot.
  • Add 6tbsp of fish sauce, 2 tbsp of salt. Taste later to the salty level that you want. Sauté button for 45 mins. The aroma of Phở will fill your entire home by now.
  • While the broth cooks, prepare the rice noodles according to the package instructions.
  • Once the timer is up, turn the instant pot off.
  • In this recipe, it is inspired by Phở Thìn Hanoi. To make the beef: slice the beef and marinate it with a little bit of salt, and pepper – quickly stir-fry the beef with fragrant minced garlic until cooked.
  • To serve, place cooked noodles in bowls and top them with sliced onion, beef slices, and green onions. Pour the hot broth over everything and garnish with coriander, Thai basil, bean sprouts, and lime wedges.
  • Offer hoisin sauce and sriracha sauce on the side for each person to add according to their taste.

Enjoy Your Flavorful Homemade Phở from the Instant Pot!
